Hashtags and captions for hair salons
Colour is the trade where the before and after does the selling, and where the technique tag is how a client finds the person who can do it. Ranked tags, ten caption templates and the shot rule that stops a colour reveal reading as a filter.
Instagram and TikTok have split this trade cleanly in two. Instagram runs on technique names, foilayage, teasylights, shadowroot, plus the trade magazine tags that exist so the magazine can repost you. TikTok runs on outcomes and identity, hairtok and colorcorrection and glowup. A colour correction is the strongest crossover format there is, because it is a technique on one platform and a story on the other.
Three platforms, three different sets
These are not the same five tags reshuffled. Instagram leans on community and trade identity, TikTok on content type and outcome, Facebook on plain local language. Copy the one you are posting to, then swap the last tag for your own city.
#balayage #colorcorrection #behindthechair #hairtransformation #haircolorist
Community and identity tags. Half the value of an Instagram tag is that a trade magazine, a supplier or a repost account watches it.
Instagram hashtags for hair salonsTikTok
Three to five, by convention not by rule#hairtok #colorcorrection #hairtransformation #blondehair #balayage
Content-type and outcome tags. Every trade has a tok suffix community tag, and the satisfying and ASMR lane is a real distribution channel rather than a joke.
TikTok hashtags for hair salons#hairsalon #balayage #hairtransformation
Local and plain-language tags. Nobody on Facebook follows a hashtag, but a suburb tag can surface in search and reads as local rather than as spam.
Facebook hashtags for hair salonsEvery tag this trade actually uses
Grouped by tier rather than ranked, because rank depends on which platform you are posting to and that lives on the platform pages. Tags marked below are Instagram or TikTok native; the rest work on both.
Broad
8Millions of posts. These reach far and convert badly. One is useful for categorisation, two is a waste of a slot you cannot spare.
Trade
16The tags that name what you actually do. This is where most of a five-tag set should come from, and where the rotation happens.
Niche
17A single service, technique or community. Smallest reach, highest intent, and the tag most likely to put you in front of somebody who is ready to book.
What works for hair salons
Two credible sources disagreed on count, and both are now moot
Salon software vendors recommended fifteen to twenty five tags; booking platforms recommended eleven. Instagram settled it in December 2025 at five. What survives from both is the mix, and the shared warning that a thirty tag dump reads as spam.
Captions now carry search weight
Instagram indexes caption keywords. Writing colour correction from box dye, Brisbane balayage does work that no tag block will do for you, and it is the main reason the five tag cap is survivable.
Carousels beat the single split image
Inspiration photo, then application, then the reveal. Each swipe is a dwell signal, and colour is the trade where the middle of the process is genuinely interesting to watch.
Post three to five times a week, not daily
The recommended mix across salon sources is two Reels, one carousel, one still and a Story series. Beauty engagement clusters around 11am and 7pm, with Reels skewing to Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Treat those as a starting hypothesis and let your own numbers overrule them.
Seasonality
Lighter colour requests spike the week the weather turns, and the December party season drives updo and gloss bookings. Colour correction peaks in January, when home dye jobs come home to roost.
The shot
Shoot both frames in the same corner of the salon under the same light, and pick the corner where the light is honest rather than flattering. Dry hair in both frames or wet hair in both frames, never one of each: wet before against blow dried after is the most called out fake tell in hairdressing.
Tags to keep off a hair salon post
Instagram publishes no official banned list and gives no warning when a tag is restricted. Every tag below was flagged by at least one source during research on 1 August 2026, and these lists rotate. Check any tag you use habitually by searching it inside the app: if the tag page says recent posts are hidden, or returns almost nothing, drop it.
- #beautybloggerThe single most common banned tag in this trade. It appears on every published list. The plural form is reportedly clean, which tells you how arbitrary these lists are.
- #bohoBoho waves and boho braids are a real content category and this tag is flagged.
- #curvyFlagged, and a natural fit for a full length client reveal.
- #prettygirlFlagged. So are attractive, sopretty and goddess, all of which read as compliments on a reveal post.
- #mirrorselfieThe salon mirror shot is the trade default and this tag is flagged.
- #easterFestive updo posts walk straight into the seasonal banned tags. Newyears, costumes and parties are in the same group.
- #modelsFlagged, and tempting on any editorial style shoot.

Common questions
- What hashtags should hairstylists and salons use?
- 41 tags are listed on this page, tiered from broad to niche, and each of the three platform pages ranks a thirty tag rotation pool out of them for that platform. Start with the platform starter set, and spend one slot permanently on your own city.
- Why are the Instagram and TikTok lists different?
- Because the platforms reward different things. Instagram tags are community and identity tags, and half their value is that a trade magazine or supplier account watches them. TikTok tags are content type and outcome tags, and every trade has a tok suffix community tag. Running one list on both is the most common mistake in the trades.
- How many hashtags can I use now?
- Instagram capped captions on posts and Reels at five hashtags, announced in December 2025 and rolled out through 2026, and it counts the caption and the comments together. TikTok publishes no cap and three to five is the convention. On Facebook hashtags do very little and two or three is plenty.
- Can I compare two video clips in the app?
- No. Before and After Video Maker takes two still photographs in and puts a video, a GIF or an image out. It has no timeline and no trimming, and nothing on this site suggests otherwise.
The tags are the easy half
The post still needs a pair of photographs that match. Shoot them, then turn them into a 1080p video, a looping GIF or a still in Before and After Video Maker. Eight templates and all four comparison modes are free.
